Johnson Wagner

Montford Johnson Wagner was born on March 23, 1980, in Amarillo, Texas. He spent his formative years in upstate New York, where his father worked as a computer science professor at the United States Military Academy at West Point. During his summers, Wagner caddied at Hudson National in Westchester County, New York. He pursued higher education at Virginia Tech, where he was a key member of the golf team. His collegiate career included being named an All-Big East Conference selection twice and earning individual medalist honors at the 2002 Big East Conference Championship. Wagner’s contributions to Virginia Tech golf were recognized with his induction into the Virginia Tech Sports Hall of Fame.

Wagner turned professional in 2002, embarking on a career that saw him compete on both the PGA Tour and the Korn Ferry Tour. He earned his PGA Tour card for the 2007 season after an impressive performance on the Nationwide Tour in 2006, where he finished second on the money list. His career on the PGA Tour included three victories. His first PGA Tour win came in 2008 at the Shell Houston Open, which secured him an invitation to the Masters Tournament and a two-year tour exemption. He followed this with a playoff win at the Mayakoba Golf Classic in 2011 and a victory at the Sony Open in Hawaii in 2012, further extending his playing privileges. Wagner maintained his PGA Tour status, including a notable runner-up finish at the 2015 Shell Houston Open.

After concluding his full-time playing career on the PGA Tour, with his last tournament being the 2022 Butterfield Bermuda Championship, Wagner transitioned into broadcasting. Since 2023, he has served as a golf analyst for NBC Sports and Golf Channel. In this role, he provides commentary for PGA Tour and major tournament coverage and contributes to studio news programming like ‘Golf Central.’ Wagner has also gained recognition for his shot re-enactments at major events, where he recreates significant shots.
