About

Christopher Delamar Caldwell, known by his stage name Bob the Drag Queen, was born on June 22, 1986, in Columbus, Georgia. His early life involved frequent moves across Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi, and he was raised in Clayton County, Georgia. Caldwell states that his mother, who owned a drag bar, significantly influenced him, often bringing him to the bar as a child and fostering his self-confidence. He pursued theater at Columbus State University before moving to Queens, New York, at age 22 with aspirations of becoming an actor and stand-up comedian. His entry into drag began in the summer of 2009 after watching the first season of “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” which inspired him to explore the art form. Initially performing as Kittin Withawhip and incorporating a nine-foot bullwhip into his act, he later adopted the stage name Bob the Drag Queen in 2013, a name that originated humorously during a karaoke hosting gig.

Bob the Drag Queen achieved national recognition in 2016 by winning the eighth season of “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” securing a $100,000 cash prize. His tenure on the show was marked by his comedic talent, including three challenge wins and a memorable “Snatch Game” performance portraying Crazy Eyes and Carol Channing. Following his win, he expanded his career into acting, appearing in television shows such as “High Maintenance” (2016), “Tales of the City” (2019), and “A Black Lady Sketch Show” (2019). In 2020, he began co-hosting the HBO series “We’re Here” alongside fellow drag queens Eureka O’Hara and Shangela, a show noted for its critical acclaim and Emmy nominations, highlighting his commitment to using his platform for community engagement and self-expression. The show involved traveling across the United States to produce one-night-only drag shows with local residents.

His career also includes significant contributions to music, releasing singles like “Purse First” (2016) and collaborating with other artists. Bob is a co-host of the podcast “Sibling Rivalry” with Monét X Change, which has a video counterpart on YouTube. He has taken on theatrical roles, such as Belize in Berkeley Rep’s “Angels in America” (2018), and toured with live drag shows like “Nubia” (2020), which celebrates Black drag queens. A notable collaboration includes serving as an emcee for Madonna’s “The Celebration Tour” in 2023–2024. In 2025, he is set to make his Broadway debut as Harold Zidler in “Moulin Rouge! The Musical” and will release his debut historical fiction novel, “Harriet Tubman: Live in Concert,” which reimagines Harriet Tubman through hip-hop. Bob is also recognized for his activism, particularly for LGBTQ+ rights, and is a co-founder of “Black Queer Town Hall,” an initiative that has raised significant funds to support Black queer voices.
