About

Brent Barry was born on December 31, 1971, in Hempstead, New York. He is the son of NBA Hall of Famer Rick Barry. He attended De La Salle High School in Concord, California, and later Oregon State University, where he played four years for the Beavers basketball team, graduating in 1995 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology.

Barry began his professional basketball career after being selected 15th overall by the Denver Nuggets in the 1995 NBA draft, though he was immediately traded to the Los Angeles Clippers. During his rookie season, he set a new rookie record with 123 three-pointers and notably won the NBA Slam Dunk Contest in 1996, becoming the first white player to do so. He continued his playing career with stints at the Miami Heat and Chicago Bulls before joining the Seattle SuperSonics for five seasons, where he often started and demonstrated his versatility as a passer and three-point shooter. He averaged 11.2 points, made 669 three-point shots, and started the majority of his NBA games with the SuperSonics, accumulating 4,107 points with the team.

In 2004, Barry joined the San Antonio Spurs, a move that marked a significant turning point in his career. He won two NBA championships with the Spurs in 2005 and 2007, becoming part of the second father-son duo to each win an NBA championship as players. After retiring from playing in 2009 following a season with the Houston Rockets, Barry transitioned into broadcasting, working as a sports commentator for NBA on TNT and as a studio host for NBA TV’s NBA Gametime, where he hosted his segment “The Bone Zone.” In 2018, he returned to the Spurs organization as vice president of basketball operations. More recently, in August 2024, Barry was appointed as an assistant coach for the Phoenix Suns. He has also been a commentator for the NBA 2K video game series since NBA 2K21.
