About

Mark-Paul Gosselaar was born on March 1, 1974, in Panorama City, California. His father, Hans Gosselaar, who is from the Netherlands, is of German and Dutch Jewish descent, while his mother, Paula (van den Brink), is of Dutch-Indonesian background. He is the youngest of four children and the only one not born in the Netherlands. Gosselaar began modeling at age five and appeared in commercials before securing guest roles in television series. His early career included appearances in 1986 on “Highway to Heaven,” “Stingray,” and “The Twilight Zone,” followed by “The Wonder Years,” “Charles in Charge,” and “Punky Brewster” in 1988.

Gosselaar gained widespread recognition as Zack Morris in “Good Morning, Miss Bliss” (1987-1989), a role he reprised in the highly successful NBC series “Saved by the Bell” (1989-1993). This role solidified his status as a teen icon and led to appearances in the TV movies “Saved by the Bell: Hawaiian Style” (1992), “Saved by the Bell: Wedding in Las Vegas” (1994), and the spin-off “Saved by the Bell: The College Years” (1993-1994). His career progression continued with diverse roles, such as the feature film “Dead Man on Campus” (1998) and the series “Hyperion Bay” (1998-1999). A significant turning point was his role as Detective John Clark in Steven Bochco’s critically acclaimed drama “NYPD Blue” from 2001 to 2005, showcasing his ability to take on more mature, dramatic characters.

He continued to expand his repertoire with lead roles in “Commander in Chief” (2005-2006), “Raising the Bar” (2008-2009), and “Franklin & Bash” (2011-2014), where he also directed an episode. Gosselaar has demonstrated his range in various television genres, including the Fox series “Pitch” (2016) and “The Passage” (2019). In 2019, he began starring as Paul Johnson in the ABC sitcom “Mixed-ish” and reprised his iconic role as Zack Morris in the Peacock revival of “Saved by the Bell” (2020-2021), also serving as a producer. More recently, from 2023 to 2025, he played the main antagonist, “Sir,” in the NBC procedural drama “Found,” a role that further highlights his versatility in complex characters. Outside of acting, Gosselaar developed the podcast “Zack to the Future,” engaging with his past work while providing behind-the-scenes insights.
