Brett Dobson was born on April 3, 2000, in Oshawa, Ontario, and developed an early passion for lacrosse. Diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in his childhood, he transitioned to goaltender to manage his condition while continuing to play the sport. He attended The Hill Academy for three seasons and spent five seasons playing Junior A Lacrosse for the Whitby Warriors. During his collegiate career, Dobson became the first recruit in St. Bonaventure University’s lacrosse program history in 2018. Over his four seasons, he set multiple school records, including Most Saves in a Single Season (252 Saves) and the Highest Save Percentage in a Single Season (66.5%). In his senior year (2022), Dobson was recognized as the MAAC Defensive Player of the Year, earned Second Team All-American honors from Inside Lacrosse and USA Lacrosse Magazine, and was named to the Tewaaraton Award Watch List. He also led the nation in Save Percentage (.665) and ranked second nationally in saves per game (16.8) and sixth in goals against average (8.9).
In 2022, Dobson was selected 12th overall by the Archers Lacrosse Club in the Premier Lacrosse League (PLL) Entry Draft, becoming the first St. Bonaventure player drafted into professional lacrosse. In his second PLL season as a starter, he led the Archers to an 8-2 regular-season record and subsequently to the PLL Championship, where he was named Championship MVP after stopping 18 of 31 shots. In the National Lacrosse League (NLL), Dobson was drafted 11th overall by the Georgia Swarm in the 2022 NLL Entry Draft. He quickly became a key player, finishing as the runner-up for the NLL Rookie of the Year Award in 2023 and being named to the All-Rookie team. During his first NLL season, he played in all 18 games, recording 555 saves with a .779 save percentage.
Dobson has also represented Canada on the international stage. He made his international debut at the 2022 World Games, where he helped Canada win the gold medal. He further contributed to the national team in the 2023 World Lacrosse Championships, securing a silver medal. Throughout his career, Dobson has consistently achieved high performance levels in both collegiate and professional lacrosse, earning accolades for his defensive skills and leadership.
