Matthew Neal Stell was born on April 19, 1984, in Center Ridge, Arkansas. He pursued an athletic scholarship, playing college basketball for Drury University from 2002 to 2006. Post-college, Stell engaged in farming and construction work while also pursuing a master’s degree in communications at the University of Arkansas. A medical missions trip to Haiti inspired him to consider a medical career, leading to his acceptance into Harvard University’s Extension School part-time pre-med program. However, in 2014, he chose to pursue a publishing deal with Wide Open Music, pivoting his career towards music prior to commencing the program.
Stell’s music career began in the late 2000s and early 2010s as the lead singer of The Crashers. During this period, he independently released three albums: ‘The Sound & the Story’ (2009), ‘Vestibule Blues’ (2011), and ‘A River Through It’ (2013). He also performed as an opening act for notable artists such as Luke Bryan and Eric Church, and contributed songwriting to other artists like Bart Crow and Casey Donahew. In 2014, he relocated to Nashville to further his music career. He released the EP ‘Last of the Best’ in 2018, which featured the single ‘Prayed For You.’ This single gained significant attention, leading to a signing with RECORDS in July 2018 and recognition as a CMT Discovery Artist.
‘Prayed For You’ achieved commercial success, reaching No. 36 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart in February 2019 and No. 54 on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart in March 2019, accumulating over 15 million Spotify plays and 44 million total streams within a year. The song earned RIAA Gold certification on September 16, 2019, and later achieved 2x Platinum status. Stell made his Grand Ole Opry debut on April 27, 2019. In May 2019, he released his major label debut EP, ‘Everywhere but On,’ which included a collaboration with Jimmie Allen. He later released singles like ‘Boyfriend Season’ (2021) and ‘Man Made’ (2022), continuing to chart with ‘Breakin’ In Boots’ in 2023, and launched the Give A Damn Foundation in 2020 to support various charitable causes.
