Brett Gelman

Brett Clifford Gelman was born on October 6, 1976, in Highland Park, Illinois. He pursued classical theater training at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. After graduating, Gelman relocated to New York City, where he honed his comedic skills as a regular performer with the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre, performing as part of the duo Cracked Out and the sketch group Mr. A$$. His early career in the 2000s saw him gain recognition as a comedian and live performer, laying the groundwork for his extensive work in television and film.

Gelman’s career progressed significantly in the 2010s with notable roles across various television platforms. He was prominently featured in several Adult Swim productions, including the series “Eagleheart” (2011–2014) and his self-titled comedy specials. During this period, he also held main cast positions in the NBC sitcom “Go On” (2012–2013), the Comedy Central series “Another Period” (2015–2018), and the FX comedy series “Married” (2014–2015). His versatility expanded to voice acting for shows like “Jeff & Some Aliens” and “TripTank.”

The latter half of the 2010s marked a turning point for Gelman with critically acclaimed supporting roles that brought him wider recognition. He portrayed Martin in the BBC comedy “Fleabag” (2016–2019) and gained significant popularity as Murray Bauman in Netflix’s “Stranger Things” (2017–present), a role that evolved into a main cast position by the fourth season. Other notable projects include “Camping” (2018), “Mr. Mercedes” (2019), and voice work for “I Heart Arlo” (2021) and “Inside Job” (2021–2022). He also starred in the drama series “Lady in the Lake” (2024).
