Matthew Adams, professionally known as Buddy Murphy, was born on September 26, 1988, in Melbourne, Australia. He began his professional wrestling career in his native Australia in 2007 under the ring name Matt Silva, competing in promotions like Professional Championship Wrestling (PCW) and Melbourne City Wrestling (MCW). He achieved early success by winning the PCW State Championship in 2010 and the MCW World Heavyweight Championship in 2012, holding the latter for 293 days.
In 2013, Murphy signed a developmental contract with WWE, joining its NXT brand. He formed a tag team with Wesley Blake, becoming the NXT Tag Team Champions in January 2015, making him the first Australian to win a championship in WWE. Their reign lasted 219 days before they lost the titles at NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn. Transitioning to a singles competitor, he moved to the main roster’s 205 Live brand in early 2018. After a notable physical transformation, he captured the WWE Cruiserweight Championship at Super Show-Down in October 2018, holding it for 183 days. His undefeated streak in televised singles matches from July 2018 until his Cruiserweight Championship loss demonstrated his growing momentum.
Murphy’s career continued to evolve with brand switches to SmackDown in 2019 and Raw in 2019, where he aligned with Seth Rollins.
