Bartolo “Buddy” Valastro Jr. was born on March 3, 1977, in Hoboken, New Jersey. He spent his early years growing up in both Hoboken and Little Ferry, New Jersey. From a young age, Valastro was immersed in the world of baking, beginning work at his family’s business, Carlo’s Bakery, at the age of 11. He learned the trade alongside his father, Bartolo Valastro Sr. When his father passed away in 1994, Valastro, then 17, assumed leadership of the family business. He attended Ridgefield Park High School and further developed his skills through baking courses at Bergen County Technical High School, Teterboro Campus.
Valastro expanded Carlo’s Bakery beyond traditional offerings, specializing in designer wedding cakes that garnered attention in bridal magazines. This exposure led to his participation in four Food Network Challenge cake competitions, where he secured a win in the “battle of the brides.” In 2009, TLC launched “Cake Boss,” a reality series documenting Valastro’s work and family life at the bakery. The show’s success led to several spin-off series, including “Next Great Baker” (2010), “Kitchen Boss” (2011), and “Buddy’s Bakery Rescue” (2013). He authored multiple cookbooks, sharing his recipes and family stories, such as “Cake Boss, Stories and Recipes from Mia Famiglia” (2010) and “Baking with the Cake Boss: 100 of Buddy’s Best Recipes and Decorating Secrets” (2011).
His business ventures extended beyond baking with the opening of Buddy V’s Ristorante in Las Vegas in 2013, followed by other restaurant concepts like PizzaCake and The Boss Cafe. In 2014, he established Buddy V’s Events, an event planning and catering company. Valastro has also engaged in brand partnerships, including a collaboration with Whole Earth Sweetener Co. in 2016 and The Pound Bakery in 2018 for pet treats. In 2019, he introduced “cake ATMs,” high-tech vending machines dispensing cake slices. In 2023, he transitioned to A&E with new shows like “Cake Dynasty” and “Legends of the Fork,” continuing to expand his media presence.
