Byron Keiron Buxton was born on December 18, 1993, in Baxley, Georgia. He attended Appling County High School, where he excelled not only in baseball but also in basketball and football, earning the nickname “Buck.” Scouts began to notice Buxton at age 15, recognizing his rare athletic abilities. He was largely considered the most talented player available in the 2012 MLB draft, ultimately being selected as the second overall pick by the Minnesota Twins. Buxton signed with the Twins on June 12, 2012, receiving a $6 million signing bonus, and made his professional debut in Minor League Baseball with the Gulf Coast Twins that same year. His early career saw rapid progression through the minor leagues, where he consistently demonstrated his five-tool potential.
His journey through the Twins’ farm system saw him named the Midwest League Most Valuable Player and recognized as Baseball America’s Minor League Player of the Year in 2013. Buxton made his Major League Baseball debut on June 14, 2015. Despite battling several injuries throughout his career, including wrist sprains, concussions, and various muscle strains, Buxton has consistently showcased moments of brilliance. He earned his first Gold Glove Award in 2017, along with the Platinum Glove Award for the American League, solidifying his reputation as one of baseball’s premier defensive outfielders. Notably, in 2022, he was named an American League All-Star, highlighting his offensive contributions.
Buxton continues to be a cornerstone for the Minnesota Twins, signing a seven-year, $100 million contract extension in December 2021. He moved to primarily serving as the designated hitter in 2023 to manage his health, but returned to center field in 2024. In 2025, he achieved notable milestones, including his 100th career stolen base and hitting for the cycle, further cementing his legacy in the Twins’ history books. Off the field, Buxton is involved in community service, supporting military families through Buxton’s Battalion, and co-owns an Ellianos Coffee franchise in his hometown.
