Derek Cameron Wake was born on January 30, 1982, in Beltsville, Maryland. He attended DeMatha Catholic High School in Hyattsville, Maryland, where he played high school football and was named The Washington Post Defensive Player of the Year in 1999. He then played college football at Pennsylvania State University for the Penn State Nittany Lions, primarily as a linebacker, but also as a defensive end. He concluded his collegiate career with 191 total tackles, 8.5 quarterback sacks, and 24 tackles for a loss.
After going undrafted in the 2005 NFL Draft and a brief stint with the New York Giants, Wake ventured into the Canadian Football League (CFL) in 2007, signing with the BC Lions. This move proved to be a significant turning point, as he transitioned to defensive end and quickly made an impact. He led the CFL in sacks with 16 in 2007 and 23 in 2008. During his time in the CFL, Wake earned numerous accolades, including the Most Outstanding Rookie Award and Defensive Player of the Year in 2007, making him the first player in CFL history to achieve both in the same season. He also received the Most Outstanding Defensive Player Award again in 2008 and was named to the CFL All-Decade Team for the 2000s.
Wake’s outstanding performance in the CFL attracted interest from NFL teams, leading him to sign a four-year deal with the Miami Dolphins in 2009. He quickly established himself as a premier edge rusher in the NFL. Over his career with the Dolphins (2009–2018), he was selected to five Pro Bowls (2010, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2016) and was a four-time All-Pro selection, including First-team All-Pro in 2012. He accumulated 98 sacks with the Dolphins, ranking him second all-time in club history. In 2019, he signed with the Tennessee Titans, where he reached the significant milestone of 100 career sacks.
