Caroline Wilson is a distinguished sports journalist who began her career covering Australian Rules football, becoming a pioneering figure for women in sports media. After joining the sports department of the Melbourne Herald in 1982, Caroline Wilson became one of the first female journalists to cover an AFL season full-time, establishing her presence in a traditionally male-dominated field. Prior to this, she began her career as a copygirl at the Melbourne Herald in 1978. In the mid-1980s, Wilson moved to London for two years, where she reported on various international news and sports events, including Wimbledon and the British Open, for the Herald and Weekly Times bureau.
Upon returning to Australia, she continued her prominent work in sports journalism, joining The Sunday Age in 1989, the same year she became the first woman to win the AFL’s gold media award. Wilson’s impactful career continued to flourish, earning her The Sunday Age journalist of the year award in 1993. From 1994 to 1996, she hosted the afternoon program for 3AW, and in 1995, she received a national RAWARD (now ACRA) as best radio current affairs commentator. In 1999, Wilson was appointed The Ages chief football writer, a pivotal role she held for two decades until 2017.
As of 2025, she has transitioned to the Seven Network, where she continues her influential role as an AFL commentator and a panellist on the new series, The Agenda Setters, further extending her reach and impact across major media platforms.
