About

Born on October 17, 1989, in the favela of Vicente de Carvalho in Guarujá, São Paulo, Brazil, Charles Oliveira da Silva faced early health challenges, including a heart murmur and rheumatic fever at age seven, which doctors initially suggested would limit sports participation. Despite this, his parents encouraged his involvement in physical activities. At 12, a neighbor introduced him to Brazilian jiu-jitsu, where trainer Roger Coelho offered free classes to low-income individuals. His family supported his training by selling street snacks and cardboard, and he quickly excelled, becoming a São Paulo champion just two months after starting.

Oliveira continued his success in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, winning the São Paulo championship again in 2004, the Copa Nação Jiu-Jitsu in 2005, and accumulating 16 medals in 2006. In 2007, as a blue belt, he became a two-time CBJJE World Champion, followed by a silver medal and CBJJE South American Champion title as a purple belt in 2008. He transitioned to mixed martial arts in 2007, making his professional debut in 2008. By 2010, he received his black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu under Ericson Cardoso and Jorge “Macaco” Patino, solidifying his foundation in grappling.

His MMA career began with a 12-0 record in Brazil before signing with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) in 2010. Over his career, Oliveira has set multiple UFC records, including the most submission wins (17), most finishes (21), and most bonuses (21) in the organization’s history. He captured the UFC Lightweight Championship in 2021 by defeating Michael Chandler and successfully defended it against Dustin Poirier. In 2025, he was announced as a recipient of the Forrest Griffin Community Award for his youth institute, ICBronxs, which provides free education and jiu-jitsu training.
