Charles Harris Steiner was born on July 17, 1949, in Forest Hills, Queens, New York City. He developed an early interest in sports broadcasting, idolizing Vin Scully as a child while growing up a Brooklyn Dodgers fan in Malverne, New York. Steiner pursued his education at Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois, graduating in 1971. His broadcasting career commenced in 1969 as a newscaster for WIRL radio in Peoria, while still a student. Following graduation, he expanded his sports broadcasting experience, hosting his first sports show on KSTT radio in Davenport, Iowa, in 1971, and later serving as news director for WAVZ radio in New Haven, Connecticut, and WPOP radio in Hartford.
Steiner moved to Cleveland, Ohio, in 1977, where he worked as a sportscaster and news director for WERE (1300 AM) and gained his initial television experience as a sports commentator for WKYC-TV. His career continued to advance in New York City, joining WXLO-FM in 1978 for newscasts and later becoming the morning drive sportscaster for WOR (AM). Simultaneously, he served as the sports director for the RKO Radio Network. His contributions to play-by-play announcing extended to the USFL’s New Jersey Generals from 1983 to 1985 and the NFL’s New York Jets in 1986 and 1987. From 1988 to 2002, Steiner was a prominent figure at ESPN, primarily as a SportsCenter anchor and lead boxing analyst. He gained recognition for his humorous segments and featured in the network’s “This is SportsCenter” promotional campaigns.
In 2002, Steiner transitioned to Major League Baseball radio broadcasting, joining the New York Yankees alongside John Sterling. A significant milestone occurred during his tenure with the Yankees when he called Aaron Boone’s game-winning home run in Game 7 of the 2003 American League Championship Series. Since 2005, Charley Steiner has been a radio play-by-play announcer for the Los Angeles Dodgers, a role that brought him back to his childhood team. He has been recognized with multiple awards, including an Emmy and induction into the National Radio Hall of Fame in 2013. Bradley University honored him with an honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters in 2010 and named its school of sports communication after him in 2015. In 2024, Steiner revealed his battle with multiple myeloma blood cancer, announcing he was in remission and planned to return to the Dodgers’ broadcast booth for the next season.
