Charley Steiner

Charley Steiner achieved widespread recognition during his impactful tenure as a prominent SportsCenter anchor and lead boxing analyst for ESPN from 1988 to 2002. During this period, he became known for his distinctive humorous segments and was a featured personality in the network’s iconic ‘This is SportsCenter’ promotional campaigns, solidifying his reputation as a versatile and engaging broadcast talent. Steiner’s foundational career began in 1969 as a newscaster for WIRL radio in Peoria, and he quickly advanced to hosting his first sports show on KSTT radio in Davenport, Iowa, in 1971. He further honed his skills as news director for WAVZ radio in New Haven, Connecticut, and WPOP radio in Hartford.

His distinguished career has been recognized with multiple accolades, including an Emmy Award and induction into the National Radio Hall of Fame in 2013. Bradley University honored his contributions with an honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters in 2010 and further solidified his legacy by naming its school of sports communication after him in 2015. In 2024, Steiner announced his remission from multiple myeloma, confirming his commitment to return to the Dodgers’ broadcast booth for the upcoming season.
