About

Joseph Patrick Santagato was born on February 25, 1992, in Astoria, Queens, New York. Of both Irish and Italian descent, his mother Elizabeth worked as a public school secretary, and his father Joseph was a firefighter. He attended St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School, Louis Armstrong Middle School, and St. Francis Preparatory School before enrolling at Queensborough Community College. Santagato ultimately decided to leave college to focus on his burgeoning YouTube career, supporting himself through jobs such as pizza delivery and waiting tables. He began producing video content at age 13, creating short movies, sketches, and song parodies. A friend later encouraged him to post his work online, leading to the creation of his “SantagatoTV” YouTube channel. His comedic influences include George Carlin, Richard Pryor, and Robin Williams, with Jenna Marbles serving as an early YouTube inspiration.

Before dedicating himself fully to YouTube, Santagato gained professional experience as a producer and editor for the online news platform Elite Daily. During this time, he also made appearances on MTV’s “Guy Court” and maintained a popular self-titled Vine account. In 2014, his YouTube channel was rebranded to “Joe Santagato.” A significant milestone occurred in 2016 when he collaborated with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson on the YouTube show “Rock The Promo.” That same year, Santagato played a role in the development of the Hasbro board game “Speak Out,” which was inspired by his “Watch Ya’ Mouth” video series. He also promoted Hasbro’s “Hearing Things” game, based on his “Whad’ya Say” series. In 2017, he co-founded Wing, a telecommunications company, alongside two former colleagues from Elite Daily. The company offered a unique billing model that reimbursed customers for unused data.

Santagato hosts “The Basement Yard,” a weekly podcast that has garnered a substantial following, featuring co-host Frank Alvarez since 2020. He also co-hosts “Other People’s Lives” with Greg Dybec. In 2021, Santagato and Dybec launched a trivia party game called “Pay The Price,” which successfully raised over $120,000 on Kickstarter. Their brand, Secret Handshake Food Co., released an everything-bagel hot sauce with Heatonist in 2022. Santagato has expanded his reach to live audiences, selling out shows and touring nationally and internationally, including performances at venues like Radio City and Madison Square Garden.
