About

Born on December 17, 1978, in Pasadena, California, and raised in Long Beach, Chase Utley developed his baseball skills early, playing at Long Beach Polytechnic High School alongside future MLB player Milton Bradley. He achieved high school All-American honors, hitting over .500 with 14 home runs in his senior year. Despite being drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1997, he chose to attend the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he excelled as a second baseman for the UCLA Bruins. During his junior year in 2000, he hit .382 with 22 home runs, earning selections to the All-Pac-10 team and multiple All-American teams. His collegiate career included stints in the Cape Cod Baseball League with the Brewster Whitecaps in 1998 and the Cotuit Kettleers in 1999, where he was named a league all-star.

Utley was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the first round (15th overall) of the 2000 amateur draft, signing for a $1.78 million bonus. He progressed through the Phillies’ farm system, playing for the Batavia Muckdogs (2000), Clearwater Phillies (2001), and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons (2002-2003). He made his MLB debut on April 4, 2003, and hit his first major league grand slam on April 24, 2003. After becoming a full-time starter in 2005, Utley had a breakout season with a .291 batting average, 28 home runs, 105 RBI, and 16 stolen bases, earning him the Mike Schmidt Most Valuable Player Award. He was a six-time All-Star (2006-2010, 2014) and a four-time Silver Slugger Award winner (2006-2009).

A career highlight came in 2008 when he helped the Philadelphia Phillies win the World Series, their first since 1980. His defensive play in Game 5, faking a throw to first and then throwing out Jason Bartlett at home, was dubbed the “Postseason Moment of the Year.” He finished his career with the Los Angeles Dodgers, playing from 2015 to 2018. Following his retirement in 2018, Utley continued his involvement in baseball as MLB’s ambassador to Europe, promoting the sport internationally. Off the field, Utley and his wife, Jennifer, are dedicated animal welfare advocates, having raised over $1 million for the Pennsylvania SPCA through various fundraising initiatives.
