Christian Vincent Siriano was born on November 18, 1985, in Annapolis, Maryland. He developed an early interest in fashion through costume design, initially designing clothes at age thirteen while working at a salon. After being declined by the Fashion Institute of Technology, Siriano pursued his studies abroad at American InterContinental University in London, England. During his senior year, he interned with influential designers Vivienne Westwood and Alexander McQueen, which further shaped his design philosophy. Upon graduating, Siriano relocated to New York City to further his career.
Siriano gained widespread recognition after winning the fourth season of the American design competition show “Project Runway” in 2007, becoming the youngest winner in the series’ history. His winning collection, presented at New York Fashion Week, was praised by judges including Victoria Beckham. This victory awarded him a fashion spread in Elle magazine, a Saturn Astra, and $100,000 to launch his own fashion label. Following his win, Siriano launched his eponymous Christian Siriano collection in 2008. His brand quickly saw commercial success, generating over $1.2 million in revenue by 2010 and an estimated $5 million by 2012. He was inducted into the Council of Fashion Designers of America in June 2013, a significant milestone in his career.
Over the years, Siriano has expanded his brand through numerous collaborations and maintained a strong presence in the media. He designed costumes for Disney’s animated film “The Pirate Fairy” in 2014 and has been a mentor on “Project Runway” for multiple seasons since 2019. In 2018, Time magazine recognized him as one of the “100 Most Influential People.” Siriano is also notable for his commitment to inclusive sizing, designing for plus-size clients and advocating for broader availability of luxury fashion in extended sizes, challenging industry norms and demonstrating the commercial viability of this approach. During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, he and his team contributed by sewing face masks for medical professionals.
