Christopher Allen Darden was born on April 7, 1956, in Richmond, California. He attended John F. Kennedy High School, graduating in 1974. Following high school, Darden enrolled at San Jose State University, where he studied criminal justice administration and participated in track and field, becoming a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in criminal justice administration in 1977. Darden continued his legal education at the University of California, Hastings, where he obtained his Juris Doctor degree in 1980.
After passing the California Bar Exam in 1980, Darden began his legal career at the National Labor Relations Board in Los Angeles. Seeking a different path, he joined the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, working in the Huntington Park and Beverly Hills offices before moving to the Criminal Courts Building in downtown Los Angeles in 1983. During his tenure as a prosecutor, Darden served in various units, including central trials and hardcore gang units, eventually transferring to the Special Investigation Division (SID) in February 1988. It was in this role that he first encountered Johnnie Cochran, who would later become a significant figure in his career.
Darden gained national recognition as a co-prosecutor in the highly publicized murder trial of O. J. Simpson in 1995. Originally brought into the case to lead the prosecution of Al Cowlings, Darden was subsequently appointed co-prosecutor due to the illness of William Hodgman. Following the Simpson trial, Darden transitioned to academia, joining the faculty of Southwestern University School of Law, where he taught criminal procedure and trial advocacy. He later established his own firm, Darden & Associates, Inc., focusing on criminal defense and civil litigation. Darden has also served as a legal commentator for several media outlets, including CNBC, CNN, Court TV, and NBC, and has authored books, including his memoir “In Contempt” and several crime novels. He ran for judge in the Los Angeles County Superior Court in 2024.
