Clancy Brown

Clarence J. Brown III was born on January 5, 1959, in Urbana, Ohio. His mother, Joyce Helen Eldridge, was a concert pianist, conductor, and composer. His father, Clarence J. “Bud” Brown Jr., managed the family-owned newspaper, Brown Publishing Company. Both his father and grandfather were Republican congressmen, and Clancy spent his early life near Washington, D.C. He attended St. Albans School in Washington, D.C., where he performed in theatrical productions and later graduated from Northwestern University, pursuing a career in acting.

Brown’s career began in the Chicago theatre scene before he made his feature film debut in 1983 with a role in “Bad Boys,” where he was cast as Viking Lofgren alongside Sean Penn. A significant early role came in 1986 as the villainous Kurgan in “Highlander,” a film that gained considerable success on home video despite its initial theatrical performance. He continued to build a reputation for portraying complex characters, including a brutal prison guard, Captain Byron Hadley, in the critically acclaimed 1994 film “The Shawshank Redemption.” Throughout the 1990s, he expanded into voice acting, contributing to animated series such as “Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm” (1995), “Street Sharks” (1994), and “Superman: The Animated Series” (1996).

Brown’s vocal talents became increasingly prominent, notably as Mr. Eugene H. Krabs in “SpongeBob SquarePants” since 1999, a role he has maintained across numerous episodes and films. He also voiced Lex Luthor in various DC Comics animated productions since 1996. His live-action career continued with roles such as Sgt. Zim in “Starship Troopers” (1997) and alongside Robin Williams in “Flubber” (1997). In video games, he provided voices for characters in the “Crash Bandicoot” franchise and “Star Wars: Bounty Hunter.” Brown has maintained a consistent presence in Hollywood, balancing voice work with live-action performances in a variety of roles.
