Clive Owen

Clive Owen was born on October 3, 1964, in Coventry, England. He is the fourth of five brothers. His father left the family when he was three, and he was raised by his mother and stepfather. Owen joined a youth theater at age 13 after a role in “Oliver!”. Initially hesitant about acting, he later graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in 1987. He further developed his acting skills with the Young Vic Theatre Company, performing in various Shakespearean productions.

Owen’s career began in British television, with early roles in projects like “Precious Bane” (1988) and “Vroom” (1990). He gained significant recognition in the UK for his lead role as Stephen Crane in the ITV series “Chancer” (1990-1991). He then received critical acclaim for his performance in the film “Close My Eyes” (1991). His international breakthrough came with the 1998 film “Croupier,” where he played a struggling writer working in a casino. Despite initially doing poorly in England, the film found an audience in the US, leading to Hollywood recognition for Owen.

His career advanced with notable roles in films such as Robert Altman’s “Gosford Park” (2001) and “The Bourne Identity” (2002). In 2004, Owen starred in the film adaptation of “Closer,” earning an Academy Award nomination, a Golden Globe, and a BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actor. He continued to take on diverse roles, including “Sin City” (2005), “Children of Men” (2006), and “Inside Man” (2006). Owen also played Sir Walter Raleigh in “Elizabeth: The Golden Age” (2007) and Ernest Hemingway in the HBO film “Hemingway & Gellhorn” (2012), for which he received an Emmy nomination. More recently, he has appeared in TV mini-series like “Monsieur Spade” (2024) and “A Murder at the End of the World” (2023), and portrayed Bill Clinton in “Impeachment: American Crime Story” (2021).
