About

Gary Allen Patterson, born on February 13, 1960, in Rozel, Kansas, established himself as a prominent figure in college football. He began his playing career at Dodge City Community College before transferring to Kansas State University, where he played strong safety and outside linebacker from 1980 to 1981. He earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Kansas State in 1983 and later a master’s degree in educational administration from Tennessee Technological University in 1984. Patterson’s coaching career began in 1982 as a graduate assistant at Kansas State, followed by various assistant coaching roles at Tennessee Tech, UC Davis, Cal Lutheran, Pittsburg State, Sonoma State, Oregon Lightning Bolts, Utah State, and Navy. These early experiences honed his defensive expertise, which would become a hallmark of his coaching philosophy.

Patterson joined Texas Christian University (TCU) in 1998 as the defensive coordinator under Dennis Franchione. During his tenure as defensive coordinator, TCU’s defense showed significant improvement, notably leading the nation in total yards and points allowed per game in 2000. This success led to him being named a finalist for the Frank Broyles National Assistant Coach of the Year award. In December 2000, Patterson was appointed head coach of the TCU Horned Frogs following Franchione’s departure. Over his 21 seasons as head coach, Patterson compiled a record of 181–79, becoming the program’s all-time winningest coach. His leadership brought TCU into national prominence, earning 22 national coach of the year honors and guiding the team to six conference championships across three different leagues.

Under Patterson, TCU achieved significant milestones, including an undefeated regular season in 2010 culminating in a Rose Bowl championship, a first for a non-automatic qualifying conference team in the BCS era. The Horned Frogs consistently ranked in the AP Top-10 and Top-25, showcasing a dominant defensive strategy that frequently led the nation in total defense. He also successfully transitioned TCU into the Big 12 Conference, securing a championship in 2014. Beyond the field, Patterson emphasized academic success for his players, with TCU frequently recognized by the AFCA for high graduation rates. His dedication extends to his charitable work through The Gary Patterson Foundation, focused on providing educational opportunities for children in Fort Worth. Patterson’s tenure at TCU solidified the university’s football program and left a lasting legacy until his departure in 2021, followed by advisory roles at the University of Texas and Baylor.
