Cole Escola was born on November 25, 1986, in Clatskanie, Oregon. They embarked on their career in comedy and performance after attending Marymount Manhattan College, eventually dropping out after one year. Escola gained early recognition through their cabaret work and the surreal YouTube video series “Very Good Looking (VGL) Gay Boys,” created with fellow comedian Jeffery Self. This partnership led to their cult-hit TV show, “Jeffery & Cole Casserole,” which ran for two seasons on Logo TV from 2009 to 2010. Escola’s early career also involved performing at children’s birthday parties and working at a Scholastic bookstore, as well as a vegan bakery and as a sex worker.

For “Oh, Mary!”, Escola received two Tony Award nominations, ultimately winning the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play in 2025, a historic achievement as the first non-binary performer to do so. The play was also a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2025. In October 2024, Escola was recognized on the TIME 100 Next list, acknowledging their rising influence.
