About

Jazz Jennings was born on October 6, 2000, in West Palm Beach, Florida. At a young age, Jennings recognized her female identity, becoming one of the youngest individuals publicly documented as transgender. Her journey gained national attention when she and her family were featured in a 2007 interview with Barbara Walters on 20/20, marking an early milestone in her public advocacy. This appearance was pivotal, establishing her as a significant voice for transgender youth by articulating her perspective with clarity.

Throughout her early life, Jennings continued to advocate for transgender rights. In 2007, her parents co-founded the TransKids Purple Rainbow Foundation, an organization dedicated to assisting transgender youth, where Jennings serves as an honorary co-founder. In 2013, she launched Purple Rainbow Tails, a company that creates rubber mermaid tails to raise funds for transgender children. A notable achievement was her two-and-a-half-year effort that led to a policy change allowing transgender students to participate on teams consistent with their gender identity within the United States Soccer Federation. Her co-authored children’s book, “I Am Jazz” (2014), further documented her experiences, becoming one of the most banned books in the U.S. due to its subject matter, yet solidifying her role as an educational figure.

Jennings’ career progressed with further media engagements and brand collaborations. In 2015, she became the star of the TLC reality series “I Am Jazz,” which chronicles her daily life and the challenges she faces. She also partnered with brands such as Clean & Clear as a spokesmodel for their “See The Real Me” campaign and appeared in commercials for Gillette Venus. In 2017, the Tonner Doll Company produced a doll modeled after Jennings, marking it as the first doll marketed as transgender. She also ventured into voice acting, portraying a transgender character, Zadie, in the Amazon Video animated series “Danger & Eggs” in 2017, and later Lily the Fairy in “The Bravest Knight” in 2019. These roles and partnerships highlight her commitment to increasing transgender visibility and advocating for acceptance across various platforms.
