Christopher Nicholas Sarantakos, known professionally as Criss Angel, was born on December 19, 1967, and raised in East Meadow, New York. His early life involved a strong interest in music, playing the drums, and a childhood fascination with magic, drawing inspiration from figures like Harry Houdini. At age 12, he began performing magic, eventually pursuing it professionally after high school rather than attending college. Before gaining widespread recognition, Angel honed his craft by performing at private events and nightclubs and studying the history of magic.
Angel’s career milestones began with his off-Broadway stage show “Mindfreak,” which ran for almost 600 performances from 2001 to 2003. This led to his breakthrough television series, “Criss Angel Mindfreak,” which aired on A&E from 2005 to 2010. The show featured large-scale illusions, including walking on water, levitation, and escaping dangerous situations, making him a household name. He has continued to produce and star in various television specials and series, such as “Criss Angel’s Magic with the Stars” on CW and “Criss Angel BeLIEve” on Spike TV.
His stage career further evolved with a long-running partnership with Cirque du Soleil for “Criss Angel Believe” at the Luxor Las Vegas, which premiered in 2008 and became the best-selling live magic show globally. After a decade at the Luxor, he launched a new “MINDFREAK” show at the Criss Angel Theater at Planet Hollywood. Angel holds multiple world records for his magical feats, including the longest time submerged underwater and the fastest straitjacket escape, and has received numerous accolades such as Magician of the Decade (2009) and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (2017). Beyond magic, he is also an accomplished musician, having fronted the industrial band Angeldust and released several albums.
