Damien Priest

Luis Martinez was born on September 26, 1982, in New York City, U.S., but spent his formative years in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico. He was introduced to professional wrestling through the World Wrestling Council (WWC) and developed an early interest in the sport. His upbringing also included intensive training in Gōjū-ryū karate, a skill he learned from his martial artist father, leading him to win two national championships in full-contact martial arts before transitioning into professional wrestling. Upon returning to New York, Martinez experienced a period of cultural adaptation due to Spanish being his primary language. During a challenging time, he faced homelessness and worked as a bouncer to sustain himself, demonstrating early resilience.

Martinez began his professional wrestling career in 2005, competing in various independent promotions across the East Coast for approximately a decade. He transitioned to Ring of Honor (ROH) in 2015, initially appearing in dark matches. In 2016, under the ring name Punishment Martinez, he signed a contract with ROH after competing in the ROH Top Prospect Tournament. During his tenure with ROH, he became a villain, aligning with B. J. Whitmer and Kevin Sullivan, and later found success by winning the ROH World Television Championship in 2018. His career progression saw him defend this title against notable opponents like “Hangman” Adam Page and Chris Sabin. In his final appearance for ROH, he lost the Television Championship to Jeff Cobb and chose not to renew his contract, signaling a move to a larger platform.

In 2018, Martinez signed with WWE, joining their developmental brand, NXT. He debuted as Punishment Martinez before being reintroduced as Damian Priest in 2019. In NXT, he captured the NXT North American Championship in 2020. His main roster debut alongside Bad Bunny at Royal Rumble in 2021 marked a significant turning point, quickly leading to a win at WrestleMania 37. Later that year, he secured the WWE United States Championship. By 2022, Priest joined The Judgment Day, where his popularity soared. He won the 2023 Men’s Money in the Bank contract and became a four-time tag team champion, holding both the Raw and SmackDown Tag Team Championships twice with Finn Bálor. His career reached a pinnacle at WrestleMania XL when he successfully cashed in his Money in the Bank contract to win the World Heavyweight Championship, solidifying his status as a top-tier performer in WWE.
