Ted DiBiase, universally known as the iconic ‘The Million Dollar Man’, began his professional wrestling career in 1974 as a referee in the Amarillo territory before active competition with Bill Watts’ Mid-South territory in 1975. He captured the WWF North American Heavyweight Championship in 1979. Internationally, in All Japan Pro Wrestling, he teamed with Stan Hansen, winning the PWF World Tag Team Championship and the World’s Strongest Tag Determination League in 1985. His groundbreaking return to the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) in 1987 as ‘The Million Dollar Man’ brought national superstardom, defined by his opulent persona, self-awarded Million Dollar Championship belt, and ‘Everybody has a price’ catchphrase.
During his seminal WWF tenure, DiBiase engaged in pivotal storylines, including a relentless pursuit of the WWF Championship, solidifying his role as one of the industry’s most compelling villains. After retiring from active wrestling in 1993 due to injuries, he made an impactful return to the WWF in 1994 as a highly effective commentator and manager. This period saw the formation of ‘The Million Dollar Corporation’, a dominant stable featuring talents like I.R.S., Bam Bam Bigelow, and notably introducing ‘The Ringmaster’, who later became Stone Cold Steve Austin. DiBiase’s influence expanded as he moved to World Championship Wrestling (WCW) in 1996, debuting as the fourth revealed member and initial spokesperson for the groundbreaking New World Order (nWo).
DiBiase was honored by the George Tragos/Lou Thesz Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2007, followed by his induction into the coveted WWE Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2010. He has maintained a presence within WWE, undertaking backstage roles and making sporadic appearances. His lasting impact was reaffirmed in 2019 with a notable reign as WWE 24/7 Champion, showcasing his continued relevance decades into his career.
