Damon Anthony Dash was born on May 3, 1971, in New York City. From a young age, he developed an entrepreneurial spirit, selling newspapers and sweeping barbershop floors to purchase sneakers and clothing. This early drive was influenced by his mother, who passed away when Dash was 15, the same year he was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. These formative experiences contributed to his determined approach to business.
Dash’s career in the music industry began in 1994 when he co-founded Roc-A-Fella Records with Jay-Z and Kareem Burke. He served as Jay-Z’s manager and business partner, playing a key role in the record label’s success. A significant milestone was organizing a tour for Jay-Z in 1999, which generated $19 million. In 1999, he also co-founded the successful fashion retailer Rocawear with Jay-Z. Roc-A-Fella Records was acquired by Def Jam Recordings in 2004, and Jay-Z later bought Dash out of his stake in Rocawear in 2005.
Following his departure from Roc-A-Fella, Dash continued to pursue various ventures. He founded DD172, a media collective that includes the magazine *America Nu*, web design firm VNGRD79, and the record label BluRoc Records. DD172 also features an art gallery. In 2014, he became involved with Blind Debit, a fingerprint payment application. Dash expanded into new creative areas, releasing the album *Culture Vultures (Audio Experience)* in 2018 alongside Kenyatta Griggs, which combined interviews about his life with music. In 2025, his rock group The Black Guns released the album *365* in collaboration with rapper Freeway, demonstrating his continued exploration of artistic and business endeavors.
