Dan Smith was born on February 23, 1989, in Manalapan Township, New Jersey. He began playing online poker at 16, and by 18, in 2007, he left college, where he was on a chess scholarship, to pursue a full-time career in poker. His first recorded tournament victory occurred in 2008 when he won the Heartland Poker Tour Main Event at Turning Stone Resort & Casino in New York, earning $101,960. Smith then relocated to Las Vegas, Nevada, which became his base of operation for his professional poker career. Throughout his career, he has accumulated over $55,000,000 in live tournament winnings.
His career saw a significant turning point in 2012. He started the year by winning the Aussie Millions 100k Challenge event for A$1,012,000. Following this, in April 2012, he achieved a remarkable feat at the EPT Monte Carlo Series, winning three separate €5000 events within five days, totaling €520,980. In August of the same year, he secured the Season 9 EPT Barcelona €50,000 Super High Roller title, capturing a first prize of €962,925. This string of victories led to him winning the 2012 GPI Player of the Year. In 2014, he reached the 20th position in the $10,000 Main Event at the World Series of Poker.
Smith continued his progression, taking down the WPT Doyle Brunson Five Diamond World Poker Classic in December 2013 for $1,161,135. In July 2016, he finished second in the WSOP $111,111 No Limit Hold’em High Roller for One Drop, earning $3,078,974. By September 2014, he was ranked first globally by the Global Poker Index. In 2018, he placed third in the WSOP $1 million Big One for One Drop event, securing $4,000,000. In 2019, he finished third at the Triton Poker Series Million for Charity tournament, which had a £1,050,000 buy-in, for over $8.5 Million. In June 2022, Smith won his first World Series of Poker bracelet by defeating Christoph Vogelsang in the 25k Heads-UP Championship, finally removing himself from the list of top players without a bracelet. In 2023, he again placed third in a $1 million buy-in event, the WPT Million for One Drop, adding over $2.8 million to his winnings.
