Danica McKellar

Danica McKellar was born on January 3, 1975, in La Jolla, California. She and her younger sister, Crystal McKellar, began acting at an early age in their mother’s dance studio. In 1982, her family relocated to Los Angeles, and a few years later, she made her first appearance in a commercial. Her early acting career included guest appearances in ‘The Twilight Zone’ (1985), which ultimately led to her breakthrough role as Winnie Cooper in the popular television series ‘The Wonder Years’ (1988-1993). Beyond acting, McKellar demonstrated strong academic abilities, particularly in mathematics and French, and continued her education at the University of California, Los Angeles.

In 1998, Danica McKellar graduated ‘summa cum laude’ from UCLA with a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics. During her undergraduate studies, she coauthored a significant scientific paper titled “Percolation and Gibbs states multiplicity for ferromagnetic Ashkin–Teller models on Z^2” with Professor Lincoln Chayes and Brandy Winn. This research contributed to the scientific community and resulted in their findings being named the “Chayes–McKellar–Winn theorem.” Her dedication to encouraging math literacy, especially among girls, led her to author several non-fiction books, including ‘Math Doesn’t Suck’ and ‘Kiss My Math,’ all aimed at helping middle school and high school girls build confidence and achieve success in mathematics. These books have become New York Times bestsellers, solidifying her role as a prominent advocate for STEM education.

Throughout her career, McKellar has maintained a consistent presence in television and film. Following ‘The Wonder Years,’ she pursued various acting roles, including recurring appearances on ‘The West Wing’ (2002-2003) as Elsie Snuffin and voice acting for animated series such as ‘Young Justice’ (2010-2022) as Miss Martian and ‘DC Super Hero Girls’ as Killer Frost. She also became a familiar face on the Hallmark Channel, starring in numerous television films like ‘Crown for Christmas’ and ‘Matchmaker Mysteries.’ In addition to her acting and writing, McKellar has participated in popular shows like ‘Dancing with the Stars’ (2014) and served as a judge on Fox’s ‘Domino Masters’ (2022). Her diverse career reflects a blend of entertainment and educational advocacy.
