Born in Busan, South Korea, on August 4, 1968, Daniel Dae Kim immigrated to the United States at age one and was raised in New York and Pennsylvania. He discovered his passion for acting while attending Haverford College, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts with a double major in theater and political science in 1990. He further honed his craft by enrolling in New York University’s Graduate Acting Program, completing his Master of Fine Arts in 1996. After graduation, Kim began his career on stage, performing in classical plays such as “Romeo and Juliet,” “Ivanov,” and “A Doll’s House,” gaining foundational experience in live performance.
Kim transitioned into television and film, building a diverse portfolio of roles that challenged stereotypes. He guest-starred on numerous popular television shows including “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,” “ER,” and had recurring roles on “Angel” and “24.” His film career began with supporting roles in major productions like “The Jackal” (1997), “For Love of the Game” (1999), “Hulk” (2003), “Spider-Man 2” (2004), and the Academy Award-winning “Crash” (2004). His early career demonstrated a commitment to varied roles and a steady progression in the entertainment industry, leading to more prominent opportunities.
His breakthrough came with his role as Jin Soo Kwon on the hit television series “Lost” (2004–2010), a performance that garnered him a 2006 Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Ensemble. Following “Lost,” Kim starred as Chin Ho Kelly on “Hawaii Five-0” (2010–2017) for seven seasons, making his directorial debut on one of the show’s episodes in 2015. He also expanded into production, establishing his company 3AD in 2014, which has since produced acclaimed series like “The Good Doctor.” Kim’s career also includes extensive voice work for animated series, films, and video games, showcasing his wide-ranging talent and influence in the industry.
