DeJuan Lamont Blair was born on April 22, 1989, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. His early life in Pittsburgh’s Hill District exposed him to basketball through his family, with both parents having played at Schenley High School. He attended Schenley High School, where he scored 1,563 career points and contributed to a 103–16 team record. During his high school tenure, he led Schenley to the 2007 PIAA Class 4A state championship, marking the first state title for a City League team since 1978. In that championship game, he notably recorded 18 points, 23 rebounds, and 6 blocked shots. Despite undergoing two surgeries during high school that left him without anterior cruciate ligaments in his knees, his athletic talent attracted significant attention from numerous colleges.
Blair attended the University of Pittsburgh and quickly made an impact. In his freshman year (2007–08), he was named a unanimous Freshman All-America selection, Big East Rookie of the Year, and earned All-Big East honorable mention honors. He set Pitt freshman records for starts (36), rebounds (337), and field goals made (168), becoming the first freshman in Pitt history to achieve over 400 points and 300 rebounds. In the 2008–09 season, Blair averaged 15.7 points and 12.3 rebounds per game, contributing to Pittsburgh securing a number one seed in the NCAA tournament. He shared the Big East Player of the Year honors in 2009 and was a consensus first-team All-American selection by major athletic press. In April 2009, he declared for the NBA draft, concluding his collegiate career.
Drafted by the San Antonio Spurs as the 37th overall pick in the 2009 NBA Draft, Blair made his NBA debut on October 28, 2009, with a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds. He was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team at the end of his first season, appearing in all 82 regular season games and leading rookies in field goal percentage (.556). Over his seven-year NBA career, he played for the Spurs (2009–2013), Dallas Mavericks (2013–2014), and Washington Wizards (2014–2016). He also gained international experience by playing in Russia, China, and Argentina, and competed in The Basketball Tournament, winning three consecutive championships with Overseas Elite.
