Delvin McCray

Delvin McCray, a Chicago native, initially explored various academic paths, including fine arts, film, and nursing, before committing to fashion design. Upon discovering his passion, he immersed himself in the field, purchasing a sewing machine, acquiring fabrics, and seeking apprenticeships to gain practical experience. He supplemented this with extensive self-study, reviewing YouTube tutorials and books on couture sewing practices.

McCray pursued his Bachelor of Arts in Fashion Design at Columbia College Chicago, graduating in 2016. During his studies, he benefited from professors who provided real-world insights into the fashion industry, emphasizing practical challenges and expectations. His design aesthetic, described as dark romanticism, integrates urban elements, blending luxury with casual comfort. He frequently incorporates materials like wool, silks, and Chantilly lace, drawing inspiration from historical periods such as the Elizabethan era. His brand’s core identity features corsetry, intricate beadwork, and tanglery, often combining materials like leather jackets with silk bias-cut gowns.

McCray’s determination led him to reapply for Project Runway after an initial rejection, eventually securing a spot on Season 18. This experience contributed to his growth as a designer by providing structured critique. At 26, his work was featured in British Vogue in February, March, and April 2019. He established two retail locations, including a brick-and-mortar store for his fusion line, Redd by Delvin McCray. In a significant career development, he initiated a Kickstarter campaign to fund his participation in Paris Fashion Week, an invitation recognizing his contributions to the fashion industry.
