Bruce Oldfield

Bruce Oldfield, born on July 14, 1950, is a British fashion designer recognized for his luxury couture. His early life was spent in the care of the children’s charity Barnardo’s, with his exposure to clothing design beginning through a foster mother who was a seamstress. This early experience in a home in Durham, where he was one of five foster children, fostered his inherent interest in garment creation. He was academically proficient, attending Spennymoor Grammar School and later Ripon Grammar School, before pursuing further education at Sheffield City College of Education and Ravensbourne College.

Oldfield graduated from St. Martin’s School of Art in London in 1973. In the same year, he presented his first one-man show for Henri Bendel in New York, followed by his debut collection in London. The Bruce Oldfield label was established in 1975, initially focusing on ready-to-wear collections for European and American markets. His transition into couture began in 1978, catering to individual clients. A significant turning point in his career was when he began designing for Diana, Princess of Wales, starting in 1980, which elevated his profile on an international scale. Oldfield opened his first shop in 1984, offering both ready-to-wear and couture pieces to a diverse clientele.

Throughout the 1980s, Oldfield also designed shoes for Rayne, a couture house. In 1990, he was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his contributions to the fashion industry. His autobiography, “Rootless,” was published in 2004. He has received Honorary Fellowships from the Royal College of Art and the Universities of Durham and Sheffield, alongside honorary doctorates from the University of Northumbria in 2001 and the University of Central England in 2005. He also served as a Governor for The London Institute from 1999 to 2001 and a Trustee for the Royal Academy of Arts from 2000 to 2002. In recent years, Oldfield designed Queen Camilla’s coronation gown in 2023.
