Demeco Ryans

DeMeco Ryans was born on July 28, 1984, in Bessemer, Alabama. He attended Jess Lanier High School, where he excelled in football, recording 135 tackles, 11 sacks, two forced fumbles, and two interceptions in his senior year. Ryans continued his football career at the University of Alabama, playing linebacker from 2002 to 2005. During his collegiate tenure, he earned roles on special teams and as a backup linebacker before steadily improving to become the SEC Defensive Player of the Year and a unanimous All-American in 2005. He also received the Lott Trophy for his athletic and academic achievements that year. After college, Ryans was selected by the Houston Texans in the second round (33rd overall) of the 2006 NFL Draft, becoming the highest-selected Alabama linebacker since 1997. He immediately made an impact, earning the starting middle linebacker position and leading the Texans in tackles during his rookie season. Ryans concluded his playing career with the Philadelphia Eagles after 10 seasons in the NFL, amassing 970 tackles, 13.5 sacks, and seven interceptions in 140 games.

Following his playing career, Ryans transitioned into coaching, joining the San Francisco 49ers in 2017 as a defensive quality control coach. He quickly advanced, becoming the inside linebackers coach from 2018 to 2020, and then the defensive coordinator for the 2021-2022 seasons. As defensive coordinator, he led a top-tier defense, resulting in him being named the PFWA Assistant Coach of the Year in 2022. On January 31, 2023, Ryans returned to the Houston Texans, the team that drafted him, as their new head coach, signing a six-year contract. In his first year, the Texans finished with a 10-7 record, clinched a playoff berth, and won their first AFC South title since 2019, notably becoming the first team in NFL history to win their division with a rookie quarterback and a first-year head coach. The team also secured a playoff victory against the Cleveland Browns in the Wild Card round.

Ryans’ leadership continued to drive success in his second season with the Texans in 2024. The team again finished the regular season with a 10-7 record, securing their second consecutive AFC South title. This made Ryans and quarterback C.J. Stroud the first head coach/quarterback duo in NFL history to win the division in each of their first two seasons together. The Texans also made it to the Divisional Round for the second year in a row, marking only the second time in franchise history. Under Ryans, the Texans’ defense achieved franchise records for sacks (49.0) and tackles for loss (106) in 2024, ranking highly in several key defensive categories across the NFL. His impactful coaching led to multiple player awards, including two NFL Rookie of the Year awards in 2023 for C.J. Stroud and Will Anderson Jr., and five Pro Bowl selections in 2024. Ryans was named the PFWA Coach of the Year and the Kansas City 101 AFC Coach of the Year in 2023, highlighting his rapid ascent and significant achievements as an NFL head coach.
