Dénes Andor Varga, born on March 29, 1987, in Budapest, Hungary, has established himself as one of the most prominent water polo players globally. His professional career began in his youth with Újpest before moving to Vasas where he secured multiple Hungarian Championships and Cups between 2005 and 2010. Varga’s talent was evident early on, earning him the Szalay Iván-díj in 2004 and the Faragó Tamás-díj for best junior player in both 2007 and 2008. He also achieved significant international success at the junior level, including gold at the Junior World Championships in 2007, where he was also MVP and top scorer.
Varga’s senior international career with the Hungarian national team is marked by numerous achievements. He was a key member of the gold medal-winning team at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, playing alongside his brother Dániel Varga. He continued to collect medals at the World Championships, securing gold in 2013 in Barcelona and again in 2023 in Fukuoka, alongside silver medals in 2007 and 2017. His contributions also led to a bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. In European Championship competitions, Varga won gold in 2020, two silver medals in 2006 and 2014, and three bronze medals in 2008, 2012, and 2016.
His club career further illustrates his sustained impact and leadership, with successful stints at Primorje Rijeka, Szolnok, and Ferencváros. At Primorje Rijeka, he won the Croatian Championship in 2013–14 and the Croatian Cup in 2012 and 2013, as well as the Adriatic League twice. With Szolnok, he added three more Hungarian Championships from 2014 to 2017 and a LEN Champions League title in 2016–17. Joining Ferencváros in 2017, he continued his winning streak with multiple Hungarian Championships and Cups, two LEN Champions League titles in 2018–19 and 2023–24, and two LEN Super Cups. Varga has also received individual accolades such as the FINA “World Player of the Year” award in 2013 and the Total-waterpolo magazine’s water polo “World Player of the Year” award in 2019, underscoring his status as a legendary figure in water polo.
