Deon Anthony Cole was born on January 9, 1972, in Roseland, Cook County, Chicago, USA. He attended Thornridge High School and later earned an acting degree from Philander Smith College. Cole’s career in comedy began on a dare, leading him to perform stand-up in Chicago. This early start paved the way for his later success as a writer for prominent late-night shows.
Cole gained significant recognition for his writing contributions to “The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien” from 2009 to 2010 and “Conan” from 2010 to 2012. His work on these shows earned him two Primetime Emmy nominations and three Writers Guild of America Award nominations. He also toured with Conan O’Brien on “The Legally Prohibited from Being Funny on Television Tour” in 2010. Beyond writing, Cole established his production company, Cole Blooded, which developed the sketch comedy show “Deon Cole’s Black Box,” airing on TBS in 2013.
In his acting career, Cole is best known for his role as Charlie Telphy in the ABC sitcom “Black-ish” (2014–2022), a performance that earned him multiple NAACP Image Awards and Screen Actors Guild Award nominations. He reprised his role in the spin-off “Grown-ish.” He also appeared as Detective Daniel “DJ” Tanner in the TBS comedy “Angie Tribeca” (2016–2018). Cole’s film credits include the “Barbershop” series (2002, 2004, 2016), “The Harder They Fall” (2021), “You People” (2023), and “The Color Purple” (2023). He has also released several stand-up specials on Netflix, including “Cole Hearted” (2019) and “Workin’ It Out” (2020), and hosted various television programs and events, demonstrating his versatility across comedic and dramatic platforms.
