Diane Kruger

Diane Kruger, born Diane Heidkrüger on July 15, 1976, in Algermissen, Germany, initially pursued a career in ballet, training with the Royal Ballet in London. A knee injury, however, ended her dance aspirations. She then transitioned into fashion modeling, quickly rising to prominence and working with major brands such as Yves Saint Laurent, Chanel, Salvatore Ferragamo, Giorgio Armani, Christian Dior, Burberry, and Louis Vuitton, and appearing on the covers of Vogue Paris, Marie Claire, and Cosmopolitan. Her modeling career led her to Paris, where she developed fluency in French and eventually began exploring acting. At the suggestion of filmmaker Luc Besson, she relocated to Paris to pursue acting more seriously.

Kruger’s acting debut came in 2002, appearing in the TV film “The Piano Player” and her then-husband Guillaume Canet’s directorial debut, “Mon Idole.” Her breakthrough role in Hollywood was as Helen of Troy in Wolfgang Petersen’s epic film “Troy” (2004), a role she secured over many prominent actresses. The same year, she starred opposite Nicolas Cage in the successful adventure film “National Treasure,” reprising her role as Dr. Abigail Chase in its 2007 sequel. These early roles established her in major international productions. She demonstrated her range by performing in films across English, French, and German languages, including “Joyeux Noël” (2005) and “Copying Beethoven” (2006).

A significant turning point in Kruger’s career was her role as Bridget von Hammersmark, a German actress and Allied spy, in Quentin Tarantino’s critically acclaimed “Inglourious Basterds” (2009). This performance earned her individual recognition, including nominations from the Screen Actors’ Guild. She continued to take on diverse roles, starring in “Unknown” (2011) alongside Liam Neeson and as Detective Sonya Cross in the FX crime drama series “The Bridge” (2013–2014). In 2017, she made her German-language debut in Fatih Akin’s “In the Fade,” winning the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actress, a testament to her acting prowess. Her recent work includes “The 355” (2022) and “Marlowe” (2022), with upcoming projects such as “The Seduction” (2025) and “Marlene” (2025), where she will portray Marlene Dietrich.
