Diego Andrés González Boneta was born on November 29, 1990, in Mexico City, Mexico, to engineers Lauro Andrés González-Moreno and Astrid Boneta Gonzalez. He holds triple citizenship for Mexico, the United States, and Spain. His career began at the age of 12 when he participated in “Código Fama,” a children’s singing reality series in Mexico. He went on to act in Mexican telenovelas like “Alegrijes y rebujos,” “Misión S.O.S,” and “Rebelde.” In 2005, he released his self-titled debut album, “Diego,” in Mexico, Chile, and Brazil, with his first single “Responde” becoming a top ten hit in several countries by 2006. His second album, “Indigo,” was released in 2008.
Boneta gained broader recognition in the U.S. with television roles such as Alex Santiago in “Pretty Little Liars” (2010), Javier Luna in “90210” (2010), and Miles González in MTV’s “Underemployed” (2012-2013). His film debut came in 2011 with “Mean Girls 2.” A significant turning point in his career was his role in New Line’s jukebox musical “Rock of Ages” (2012), where he starred opposite Tom Cruise and Julianne Hough. This role earned him CinemaCon’s “Rising Star of the Year” award and an ALMA award for best actor. He later appeared in the CBS miniseries “The Dovekeepers” (2015), Imagine Entertainment’s “Pelé: Birth of a Legend” (2016), and the FOX horror-comedy series “Scream Queens” (2015).
From 2018 to 2021, Boneta starred as the titular character and served as an executive producer in “Luis Miguel, La Serie” for Telemundo and Netflix, a role that garnered critical acclaim. Since then, he has expanded into producing and writing, notably executive producing and starring in “Killing Castro” (2024) and co-writing and producing the Paramount+ film “At Midnight” (2023), which ranked #1 in over twenty countries on the platform. He also starred in the Warner Brothers film “Father of the Bride” (2022) and the Amazon Prime series “¿Quién lo mató?” (2024), which quickly reached #1 in Mexico. Boneta is currently producing and starring in a new spy series with Amazon and is set to publish his debut thriller novel, “The Undoing of Alejandro Velasco,” in 2025.
