Diego Costa

Born Diego da Silva Costa on October 7, 1988, in Lagarto, Sergipe, Brazil, his football journey began unconventionally. Despite not initially believing he would become a professional, he honed his skills in street football and later at Barcelona Esportivo Capela in São Paulo. His talent was quickly recognized by agent Jorge Mendes, leading to his first move to Europe with Braga in Portugal in 2006 at the age of 17. After a loan spell at Penafiel, he signed with Atlético Madrid the following year. The initial years at Atlético involved several loan spells with Braga, Celta Vigo, and Albacete, where he demonstrated nascent goal-scoring ability and a strong, sometimes controversial, playing style. He gained a reputation for being a disruptive influence during his time at Celta Vigo and Albacete, but also showcased moments of brilliance, such as scoring crucial goals and providing assists.

Costa’s career gained significant momentum upon his return to Atlético Madrid in 2010. He initially served as a backup but eventually secured a regular starting role, flourishing under manager Diego Simeone. This period marked a turning point, as he played a pivotal role in Atlético’s success, including a La Liga title, a Copa del Rey, and a UEFA Super Cup. His impressive performances attracted the attention of Premier League giants Chelsea, who signed him in 2014 for €35 million (£32 million). At Chelsea, Costa continued his prolific goal-scoring form, contributing significantly to two Premier League titles and a League Cup, solidifying his status as one of the league’s top strikers. Beyond club football, Costa represented both Brazil (twice in 2013) and Spain at the international level.
