Mexican actor, director and producer Diego Luna is known internationally for starring in films including Y Tu Mamá También and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Beyond these, he is known for playing the lead role of drug lord El Padrino in Narcos: Mexico, and has won multiple industry awards.
Starting out as a child actor, Luna appeared on stage for the first time at age seven, and went on to feature on television shows including El Abuela y Yo. Over the following years, he developed a career in telenovelas including El Premio Mayor and La Vida en El Espejo, and had his big screen debut in Gabriel Retes’ A Sweet Scent of Death (Un Dolce Olor a Muerte). His international breakthrough was secured in 2001 with Alfonso Cuarón’s cult road trip movie Y Tu Mamá También, in which he starred opposite Gael García Bernal and Maribel Verdú. His film credits since have included the acclaimed biopic Milk, the computer-animated fantasy adventure The Book of Life, the Star Wars spin-off Rogue One, and 2019’s A Rainy Day in New York opposite Tomothée Chalamet, Selena Gomez, Jude Law and Elle Fanning. As a director, his films have included Abel, César Chávez and Mr. Pig.
On the small screen, Luna has become known for Fidel, Casanova and Netflix’s hit crime drama Narcos: Mexico. He has also worked extensively as a voice performer, appearing in American Dad!, Trollhunters and 3Below, and narrating the acclaimed National Geographic Channel documentary series Great Migrations. Luna has won a Critics Choice Award, an Imagen Award and an Audience Award, and was honoured with the Venice International Film Festival’s Marcello Mastroianni Award. He has won several MTV Movie Awards, and has received nominations at the Saturn Awards, Teen Choice Awards, and at festivals and ceremonies across the world.
