Diego Schwartzman was born on August 16, 1992, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He turned professional in 2010. Early in his career, he showed promise on the Challenger Tour, winning four titles in 2014 and becoming the ATP Challenger Tour Finals champion. His first significant ATP title came in 2016 at the Istanbul Open. He continued to progress, reaching the quarterfinals of the 2017 US Open. His 2018 season saw him secure his second ATP title at the Rio Open, an ATP 500 clay tournament, which was the biggest title of his career at that point. By April 2018, he had broken into the top 15 of the singles rankings. In 2019, he captured his third ATP title at the Los Cabos Open, marking his first hard-court victory. He also reached his first Grand Slam doubles semifinal at the French Open that year.
Schwartzman achieved a career high in 2020, reaching his first Masters final at the Italian Open and a Grand Slam semifinal at the French Open. These achievements propelled him into the top 10 of the singles rankings, reaching world No. 8 in October 2020. He also made his debut at the ATP Finals, competing among the top eight players in the world. In 2021, he won his fourth ATP title at the Argentina Open. Throughout his career, Schwartzman was known for his high-quality return game, leading all ATP players in percentage of second serve return points won in multiple seasons. He officially retired from professional tennis after the Argentina Open in February 2025.
