The amazing Dina Asher-Smith is an incredible athlete who also happens to be the fastest British woman in recorded history. She currently holds British records in 100m (10.83 secs), 200m (21.88 secs), and in the 4 x 100m (41.77 secs). She also holds British junior records in the 100m (11.14 secs) and 200m (22.61.secs), as well as the European Junior Indoor record in the 200m (23.15 secs). Not only that, but she is also the world’s fastest teenager ever over 60m and 200m. She became the first British woman to win 17.a World title in the 100m or 200m events in the IAAF World Athletics Championship in Doha in 2019. She was recently listed in the Powerlist as one of the UK’s most influential people of African/Caribbean descent.
Born and raised in Orpington, she began showing an interest in sprinting at an early age. She started competing while still at school, and ran the 300m in 2009 aged 13 in a record time of 39.16 secs. She went on to win the English Schools Championships 200m title as an Under 15 in 2010, Under 17 in 2011, and Under 20 in 2013. The same year she won two gold medals at the European Junior Championships in Rieti, with the British squad claiming the bronze medal. Success followed success, and more and more records were broken. Asher-Smith eventually found herself at the 2016 Rio Olympics, where she won a bronze with her team mates, Desiree Henry, Daryll Neita and Asha Philip, in the 4 x 100m relay in a British record of 41.77 secs. In 2019 she became the World Champion in the 200m, setting a personal best and new British record of 21.88 secs. Outside of athletics, she attended King’s College London, graduating with a BA in History in 2017.
