Domhnall Gleeson

Domhnall Gleeson was born on May 12, 1983, in Dublin, Ireland, and raised in Malahide, County Dublin, the eldest son of actor Brendan Gleeson. He pursued media arts at the Dublin Institute of Technology before beginning his career in directing and writing for film and stage. His early acting work included appearances in the British television miniseries “Rebel Heart” (2001) and his film debut in Martin McDonagh’s short film “Six Shooter” (2004), which won an Academy Award. Gleeson gained early recognition for his stage work, including a Tony Award nomination in 2006 for his role in the Broadway production “The Lieutenant of Inishmore.” He further developed his acting skills in productions such as “American Buffalo” and “Great Expectations” at the Gate Theatre in Dublin.

Gleeson’s career gained significant momentum with his portrayal of Bill Weasley in the final two installments of the “Harry Potter” film series (2010–2011), which introduced him to a wider global audience. This period also saw him take on roles in the dystopian romance “Never Let Me Go” (2010) and the Coen Brothers’ Western “True Grit” (2010). He further solidified his presence in the industry with acclaimed performances in films like “Anna Karenina” (2012) and “About Time” (2013), where his natural charm and versatility became evident. A turning point arrived in 2015 with four Oscar-nominated films: “Ex Machina,” “Brooklyn,” “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” and “The Revenant.” His role as General Hux in the Star Wars sequel trilogy established him in major blockbuster cinema, while “Ex Machina” showcased his talent in a science fiction psychological thriller.

In recent years, Gleeson has expanded his work into television, taking on main roles in various series. He co-starred in the HBO black comedy series “Run” (2020) and co-created the Irish comedy series “Frank of Ireland” (2021) with his brother Brian Gleeson. His performance as serial killer Sam Fortner in the FX on Hulu limited series “The Patient” (2022) earned him Golden Globe and Critics Choice nominations, highlighting his ability to tackle complex characters. He also appeared in the satirical political miniseries “White House Plumbers” (2023) and is set to star as the lead in “The Paper” (2025), a spin-off series from “The Office.” Beyond acting, Gleeson is actively involved in charity work, notably creating the “Immatürity For Charity” comedy sketches to raise funds for St. Francis Hospice in Dublin, a cause he supports in honor of his grandparents.
