Donna Mills, born Donna Jean Miller on December 11, 1940, in Chicago, Illinois, began her acting career in local amateur and professional theatrical productions. She made her Broadway debut as a harem girl in Woody Allen’s “Don’t Drink the Water.” Her early television appearances included recurring roles on Manhattan-based soap operas “The Secret Storm” and “Love Is a Many Splendored Thing.” Mills made her film debut in the hard-hitting drama “The Incident” in 1967, alongside Martin Sheen and Beau Bridges. In 1971, she acted with Clint Eastwood in the cult thriller “Play Misty for Me.” Throughout the 1970s, Mills guest-starred on numerous top-rated series and established herself in made-for-TV movies, often cast as a damsel in distress. Notable credits from this period include “Murph the Surf” (1975) and various TV movies where she played lead roles.
Her career trajectory significantly shifted in 1980 when she took on the role of Abby Cunningham Ewing in the primetime serial “Knots Landing.” This role allowed Mills to move from playing vulnerable characters to a more complex, calculating antagonist. She remained with the highly successful show for nine years, earning three Soap Opera Digest Awards for Outstanding Villainess in 1986, 1988, and 1989. Following her departure from “Knots Landing,” Mills focused on television films, many of which she produced through Donna Mills Productions, focusing on social issues. These productions included “The World’s Oldest Living Bridesmaid” (1990), “Runaway Father” (1991), “In My Daughter’s Name” (1992), and “My Name Is Kate” (1994).
Mills returned to “Knots Landing” for its final episode in 1993 and again for the reunion miniseries in 1997. In 2014, she joined the cast of ABC’s “General Hospital” as Madeline Reeves, a role for which she received a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Performer in a Drama Series. More recently, she has appeared in films such as “Joy” (2015) and “Nope” (2022), and starred in the reality show “Queens of Drama” (2015). Mills has continued to be active in television with guest roles in series like “The Rookie: Feds” (2023) and “NCIS” (2024), and various Lifetime productions.
