Mikhail Oskarovich Varshavski, born on November 12, 1989, in Saransk, Soviet Union, immigrated to Brooklyn, New York, with his family at the age of five. Throughout high school, he earned the nickname “Doctor Mike” for his assistance with sports-related injuries. Motivated by his father’s medical career and his observations of patient relationships, he pursued a career in medicine. He enrolled in a demanding seven-year program at the New York Institute of Technology, completing a bachelor’s degree in life sciences and a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine. During his medical training, his mother passed away from leukemia, a personal experience that solidified his dedication to healthcare. In 2014, he commenced a residency in family medicine at Atlantic Health System’s Overlook Medical Center, concluding in 2017.
Dr. Varshavski began documenting his journey as a medical student on Instagram in early 2012, aiming to demonstrate that a fulfilling life was possible alongside medical studies. This initiative evolved into a platform where he shares accessible health information. His online presence gained substantial traction in August 2015 following a BuzzFeed article highlighting him and his dog. Consequently, People magazine recognized him as “the Sexiest Doctor Alive” in November 2015, significantly boosting his Instagram following.
After completing his residency, Dr. Varshavski joined Chatham Family Medicine, part of Atlantic Health System, in Chatham, New Jersey, in 2018. He launched his YouTube channel in 2016, which rapidly grew in popularity. In 2017, he delivered a TEDx Talk titled “The epidemic of the ‘I Know It All’ expert,” focusing on combating misinformation. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he adapted his YouTube content to address public inquiries about the virus, including debunking false medical claims and interviewing prominent figures like Anthony Fauci in March 2020. In addition to his medical and online work, he has engaged in professional boxing, debuting in May 2022 in the Creator Clash event where he won by unanimous decision. He made his professional boxing debut in October 2022, losing by unanimous decision. He also expanded his educational efforts by launching “The Checkup Podcast with Doctor Mike” in September 2022.
