Drake Lee Maye was born on August 30, 2002, in Huntersville, North Carolina. He attended William A. Hough High School before transferring to Myers Park High School, where he excelled in both football and basketball. In high school, he earned All-Conference and All-District honors in basketball and was named The Charlotte Observer’s 2019 male athlete of the year for his football performance, which included throwing for a school-record 3,512 yards and 50 touchdowns. He committed to play college football at North Carolina, where his father, Mark, also played quarterback. His brothers, Luke and Cole, achieved national championships in collegiate basketball and baseball, respectively. Maye’s competitive upbringing instilled a strong desire for success.
Maye continued his football career at the University of North Carolina. After redshirting his freshman year in 2021, he became the starting quarterback in 2022. He set records by throwing five touchdowns in his debut game against Florida A&M. During the 2022 season, he led the NCAA in total offense with 5,019 yards, passing for 4,321 yards and 38 touchdowns, and rushing for 698 yards and 7 touchdowns. He earned ACC Player of the Year, ACC Offensive Player of the Year, and First-Team All-ACC honors. In 2023, he received second-team All-ACC honors after throwing for 3,608 yards and 24 touchdowns. He declared for the 2024 NFL Draft, finishing his college career fifth in passing yards and fourth in passing touchdowns in UNC history.
In the 2024 NFL Draft, Maye was selected third overall by the New England Patriots. He signed a four-year, fully-guaranteed contract. After starting his rookie season as a backup, he took over as the starting quarterback in Week 6. He made history in his first NFL start by leading his team in rushing and throwing three touchdown passes, a feat not achieved since at least 1950. Maye earned a Pro Bowl selection in his rookie season. In 2025, he led the Patriots to their first division title since 2019 and an appearance in Super Bowl LX. He earned a second consecutive Pro Bowl selection and second-team All-Pro honors, leading the league in passer rating and completion percentage. He finished second in MVP voting to Matthew Stafford in 2025, receiving 23 first-place votes.
