Drew Allison Carey was born on May 23, 1958, in Cleveland, Ohio. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve from 1980 to 1987 as a field radio operator in the 25th Marine Regiment. His comedy career began in 1985, following a suggestion from a friend. After winning an open mic contest, Carey became Master of Ceremonies at the Cleveland Comedy Club and performed at various comedy clubs. His national television debut came in 1988 on “Star Search,” followed by an appearance on “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson” in 1991, which earned him a rare invitation to sit on Carson’s couch. In 1994, he wrote and starred in his own stand-up special, “Drew Carey: Human Cartoon,” which received a CableACE Award for Best Writing.
