Drew Doughty

Drew Doughty was born on December 8, 1989, in London, Ontario, Canada. His introduction to hockey began early, skating by the age of two and playing before four. In his youth, Doughty also played soccer as a goalkeeper, a sport he pursued until age 16, developing an awareness of field dynamics that later aided his hockey career. His major junior career began in 2005 when he was selected fifth overall by the Guelph Storm in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Priority Selection draft. He quickly made an impact, earning a spot on the OHL All-Rookie Team in 2006. Doughty continued to excel, participating in the 2007 OHL All-Star Game and being named the league’s top offensive defenseman. In 2008, he received the Max Kaminsky Trophy as the OHL’s outstanding defenseman.

Doughty was drafted second overall by the Los Angeles Kings in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. He made his NHL debut at age 18 in October 2008 and scored his first NHL goal later that month. His rookie season concluded with six goals and 21 assists, earning him a spot on the NHL All-Rookie Team and a fifth-place finish in Calder Trophy voting. In his sophomore season (2009-10), Doughty’s performance improved significantly, accumulating 59 points and being named a finalist for the Norris Trophy, which recognizes the league’s top defenseman. He played a crucial role in bringing the Kings to the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2002. In 2011, Doughty signed an eight-year, $56 million contract with the Kings. He was instrumental in the Kings securing their first Stanley Cup in 2012, leading all defensemen in playoff scoring. He achieved his second Stanley Cup with the Kings in 2014. Doughty continued to demonstrate leadership, being named alternate captain for the Kings prior to the 2015-16 season.

In 2016, Doughty won the James Norris Memorial Trophy as the NHL’s top defenseman. He has been selected to the NHL All-Star Game multiple times between 2015 and 2019. In 2018, he signed an eight-year, $88 million contract extension with the Kings. Doughty reached his 1,000th NHL game milestone on January 27, 2022, becoming the first player from the 2008 NHL Draft to achieve this. On October 21, 2023, he played his 1,100th NHL game, becoming the fourth player in Kings history to do so. In international play, Doughty earned a gold medal with Canada at the 2008 World Junior Championship, where he was also recognized as the tournament’s top defenseman. He also secured two Olympic gold medals with the Canadian national team in 2010 and 2014, and a gold medal at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey. Doughty was recently added to Team Canada for the 2025 4 Nations Face-Off, showcasing his continued presence in high-level international competition.
