Ashleigh Johnson

Ashleigh Johnson was born on September 12, 1994, in Miami, Florida. Her parents, Donna and Winston Johnson, are both from Jamaica. She grew up in Miami and was introduced to aquatics at a young age by her mother. While not initially fond of swimming, water polo became a passion. Johnson attended Ransom Everglades High School, where she was a four-year letter winner and starter for the water polo team, leading them to three consecutive Florida state championships. She also competed in swimming, earning All-County honors twice and winning the individual state championship in the 50 free during her sophomore year. Her early experiences shaped her into a dedicated athlete.

Johnson committed to Princeton University for collegiate water polo. She graduated in 2017 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. During her collegiate career, she became Princeton’s all-time leader in saves with 1,362 and achieved 100 career victories. She was a four-time first-team all-conference player and the CWPA Player of the Year, earning First Team CWPA All-Conference and All-Tournament honors in 2017. Her success at Princeton paved the way for her international career.

Ashleigh Johnson rose to international prominence when she joined the US Olympic water polo team. In 2016, she became the first African-American woman to play on the U.S. Olympic Women’s Water Polo Team, contributing significantly to their gold medal win at the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Summer Olympics. She further secured a gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics (held in 2021) and competed in the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics, where the team placed fourth. Johnson has also played professionally for Ethnikos Piraeus in Greece (2021-22), winning the Women’s LEN Trophy, and for NC Vouliagmeni (2018-19) and Ekipe Orizzonte in Sicily (2017-18). She is a recognized advocate for diversity and inclusion in aquatic sports.
