Earvin N’Gapeth, born in Saint-Raphaël, France, on February 12, 1991, began his professional volleyball career in 2008 at the age of 17. Named after basketball legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson by his father, Eric, who also represented France in volleyball at Seoul 1988, N’Gapeth quickly established himself as a prominent outside hitter. His early career at Tours VB in France (2008–2011) saw him contribute to three consecutive French Cup titles and a French Championship in 2010. He then moved to Italy, playing for Piemonte Volley from 2011 to 2013, where the team reached the CEV Europe League finals, followed by a brief period with Russia’s Kuzbass Kemerovo in 2013.
Returning to Italy, N’Gapeth made a significant impact with Modena Volley from 2014 to 2018, securing two Italian Cups, two Italian SuperCups, and an Italian Championship. During this period, he earned multiple individual accolades, including Italian Cup MVP, FIVB World League MVP, and CEV European Championship Best Outside Spiker in 2015. He later played for Zenit Kazan in Russia until 2021 before returning to Modena Volley again. N’Gapeth’s international career with the French national team includes a bronze medal at the 2007 U19 World Championships, gold at the 2007 and 2009 U19 European Championships, and gold at the 2008 U21 European Championships. He was a key figure in France’s 2015 European title and was named MVP of the FIVB World League in 2017 when France won gold.
A significant milestone in N’Gapeth’s career was his pivotal role in France’s historic gold medal win at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, where he was named the Most Valuable Player and Best Outside Spiker. His performance included 124 attacks, six blocks, and six aces. He further demonstrated his consistent excellence by earning MVP and Best Outside Spiker honors at the 2022 FIVB Nations League. His play is characterized by explosive vertical leaping, versatile attacks, strategic tips, powerful serves, and effective blocking, all delivered with an infectious passion that inspires his teammates.
